Course Description

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is an in depth qualification that will help you advance your career in early childhood by allowing you to take on higher levels of responsibility and leadership. It is the qualification ACEQA requires for those wishing to take on a Team Leader role or a Senior Assistant role and will give you greater understanding on how to promote a play based learning environment, lead an education and care program and to support staff in facilitating high quality care.

Within the Diploma, it will give you further knowledge on how to implement and manage learning programs for 0-5 year olds, support you in supervising staff and visitors and will assist you in designing, planning and evaluating learning programs for children. It will give you highly sought after skills, knowledge and experience in childhood development that services are seeking in highly skilled educators.

Placement Hours of Work

To achieve this qualification, the individual must have completed a total of least 280 hours of work in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency. The total number of hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours.

International Delivery

This course is not currently available to international students.

Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who hold a:

  • CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or
  • CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.

The Diploma qualification provides for employment in the following roles:

  • Centre Based Director
  • Lead Educator in Long Day Care, Child Care Centres, Occasional Care
  • Educational Leader
  • Centre Manager
  • Family Day Care Coordinator
  • Family Day Care Educator
  • In Home Care Provider or Coordinator
  • Out of School Hours Coordinator
  • Out of School Hours Educator
  • Preschool Assistant
  • Assistant Educator in a Kindergarten or preschool program, working with a teacher
  • Nanny
  • Other education based employers may accept this qualification, such as working as a tutor, education support staff or as a teacher aide.

Some universities offer credit from the Diploma qualification to enrol in Early Childhood teaching qualifications.

While you progress through the Diploma you new skills in leadership, planning and delivering more engaging activities with children, and other skills such as communication and organisation, will all enhance the quality of work you perform, and the enjoyment you gain from it.

All applications to enrol in our accredited Early Childhood courses are subject to the selection process and course student capacity constraints, there is no guarantee of acceptance into a course. As part of the application process, you will be enrolled in a “holding class” titled “ECEC Eligibility Check” in which you will be required to complete a LLN test and provide the following documentation: South Australian Working with Children Check, RRHAN-EC Fundamentals and Masterclass Certificate, Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting (Diploma in Early Childhood Only) and Previous Qualifications (Diploma in Early Childhood Only). Your application will then be reviewed and you will be contacted regarding your application outcome. There is no fee incurred for the application process. ELC Training supports their students by providing a “workplace-based training” day minimum once a fortnight for students, and I personally have seen the value in this and appreciate the hands-on support. Not only do the students get more contact time to hone their practical skills, but the pressure has been taken off senior staff as there isn’t as high an expectation to teach/supervise students as what has been experienced with traditional RTO models. The dedication to be sending Trainers out in person to our regional site only speaks to the passion and ethos of ELC Training. In addition to the in-person contact, students have also been provided with the ability to schedule online catchups with Trainers to discuss their study and receive one-on-one help. This is allowing our students who might require more support to access trainers when it suits them as often as required.
